Viltrox AF 50mm  F1.4 Pro Z Review

Based on the review by Kai W

Introduction

In this video review, Kai takes a closer look at the Viltrox AF 50mm F1.4 Pro for Nikon Z-mount, evaluating its autofocus speed, optical rendering, and overall shooting character in practical use.

Despite its substantial size, the lens delivers several notable strengths, particularly in autofocus performance and image rendering.

🏞 Fast and Responsive Autofocus

One of the first aspects Kai highlighted was the autofocus speed. During testing, the lens demonstrated very quick focus acquisition, responding rapidly to subject changes.

Kai described the focusing performance as particularly impressive, noting:

“It is amazingly quick. I mean, the speed at which it acquires focus… that’s pretty impressive.”

According to Kai, the responsiveness makes the lens well suited for real-world photography situations where reliable and fast autofocus is important.

🎨 Optical Performance

Optical Performance and Rendering

Kai also commented positively on the lens’s optical control. In his testing, distortion and chromatic aberration appeared to be well managed.

With a large F1.4 aperture, the rendering of shallow depth of field plays a major role in the visual character of a 50mm lens. Kai noted that the bokeh quality was one of the more appealing aspects of the lens.

“This lens shows very low distortion, seemingly no visible chromatic aberration.”

“The bokeh looks lovely.”

“The bokeh is ever so smooth, really gorgeous.”

Kai also observed that when shooting wide open, the lens shows some optical vignetting toward the edges of the frame, producing cat-eye shaped highlights.

“Towards the edges, it does show some optical vignetting… giving the cat’s-eyes bokeh shapes.”

He pointed out that this effect ultimately comes down to personal preference, as some photographers enjoy the additional character it gives to the image.

Lens Flare Characteristics

Another point Kai discussed in the review was the flare behavior of the lens. When shooting in certain lighting conditions, the lens can produce noticeable rainbow-style flare.

“It’s quite flare-y… It’s got a very rainbow flare.” Kai commented.

However, Kai also suggested that flare characteristics should not always be treated purely as a flaw.
“In typical lens tests or reviews, flaring is often considered undesirable, but it really should be up to the person buying it to figure out whether it appeals to them or not.”
For some photographers, this distinctive flare pattern may add creative possibilities to certain shooting scenarios.

Wide-Open Rendering

Kai also mentioned that the lens produces a softer rendering when used wide open at F1.4. While the out-of-focus areas appear smooth and pleasing, the focused areas at maximum aperture show a slightly softer character.

“The out-of-focus bits are nice and soft… but the in-focus bits at F1.4 are super soft too.”

He noted that this type of rendering could still be useful for portrait photographers who prefer a gentler look.

🔍Overall Impression

Overall, Kai found the Viltrox AF 50mm F1.4 Pro Z to offer several compelling characteristics, including very fast autofocus and pleasing bokeh rendering.

As Kai summarized in the video:

“Focus is quick. Bokeh’s nice.”

With strong autofocus performance and a distinctive optical character, the lens offers an interesting alternative for Nikon Z users looking for a fast 50mm prime.
