Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about autofocus, video performance, filters, image quality, and everyday use of the Viltrox AF 26mm F2.8 EVO.
The AF 26mm F2.8 EVO uses a compact geared STM (Stepping Motor) focusing system. Compared with conventional lead-screw STM designs, the geared structure helps keep the lens compact, but focusing may feel slightly slower in certain situations.
This is a characteristic of the motor design and does not indicate a malfunction.
Yes. Because the lens uses a geared STM focusing system, you may feel a slight vibration through the lens body as the gears operate. A faint mechanical sound may also be audible during autofocus.
This is normal behavior for this focusing mechanism.
Yes. The AF 26mm F2.8 EVO can be used for video recording and works well for everyday video, travel footage, street scenes, and moderate focus transitions.
For the best results, we recommend avoiding extremely large or sudden focus transitions. Due to the characteristics of the geared STM motor, very large focus shifts may take slightly longer than with some faster focusing systems.
Filter compatibility depends on the lens hood supplied with each color version.
- Filters can only be installed on the round lens hood.
- The lens itself does not have a filter thread for direct filter installation.
- The square hood and round hood cannot be used at the same time.
- A 43mm filter is required when using the round hood.
No. The AF 26mm F2.8 EVO features a clicked aperture ring by default and does not support switching between clicked and clickless operation.
No. The focusing group does not freely move or rattle when the camera is powered off.
However, when using manual focus, the focusing group may temporarily remain at its last position when the camera is turned off.
We recommend waiting until the lens has fully retracted before removing it from the camera. If the lens is removed while the front optical group is still extended, the front lens cap may not fit properly.
Yes. The AF 26mm F2.8 EVO delivers strong center resolution and is well suited for high-resolution full-frame cameras.
Actual image quality may vary depending on aperture, focusing distance, shooting conditions, and camera settings, but the lens is capable of delivering excellent center detail on high-resolution sensors.
The AF 26mm F2.8 EVO can be used for night-sky photography. Coma performance may vary between mount versions, with the Nikon Z-mount version showing particularly well-controlled coma.
For astrophotography, we recommend using a tripod and adjusting aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and focus according to the shooting environment.
Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount cameras use different sensor designs, sensor cover-glass structures, and optical configurations between the lens and image sensor.
These differences can affect how light reaches the edges and corners of the sensor, so slight variations in corner performance between mount versions are normal.
Strong light sources entering the lens directly may cause flare or ghosting. To reduce flare, we recommend:
- Using the supplied lens hood
- Stopping the aperture down by approximately one stop when appropriate
- Slightly adjusting the shooting angle
- Avoiding extremely strong light sources entering the front element directly whenever possible
Depending on the scene, flare can also be used creatively as part of the final image.
