Viltrox offers two versions of the 35mm F1.2 LAB with the same core optical formula. The N version tested here removes the display and uses a conventional aperture ring marked from f/1.2 to f/16, making aperture changes easy to see and adjust directly on the lens.
Optical design
Features
The optical design uses 15 elements in 10 groups, including three high-refractive-index elements, five extra-low-dispersion elements and two ultra-precision aspherical elements. The goal is high resolution across the frame while keeping chromatic aberration and other optical issues under control.
The f/1.2 maximum aperture gives the lens its creative character. It allows more light into the camera in dim conditions and creates very shallow depth of field, especially close to the 34 cm minimum focusing distance. An 11-blade diaphragm is designed to keep highlights rounded and background blur smooth.
Focusing is internal, so the lens does not extend as focus distance changes. Four HyperVCM motors drive the focus group, with support for modern face- and eye-detection systems on compatible cameras.

Build and handling
At 910 g, the AF 35mm F1.2 LAB N FE is substantial for a 35mm prime. That weight reflects the large f/1.2 aperture, complex optics and metal construction. The LAB-series body uses an aerospace-grade metal barrel, a plated brass mount and sealing against dust and moisture, while the front element has a coating intended to resist water, dirt and fingerprints.
The wide manual-focus ring is easy to find by touch, while the aperture ring sits closer to the camera and gives clear click feedback. There is no aperture-ring lock, but a side switch lets video shooters disengage the clicks for smoother exposure changes.
The barrel also includes an AF/MF switch and two function buttons. In the Sony setup used for the review, only the first button could be assigned through the camera, which is worth noting if extensive button customization is important to your workflow.
Real-world focusing
Autofocus
Paired with the Sony A7R VI, autofocus was reported as fast, accurate and decisive, with effective subject and eye detection. At a local music gig, this made it easier to shoot through people in the audience while keeping attention on the performers and the atmosphere of the scene.
The bright aperture helped keep ISO under control in the dark venue, while eye detection allowed the photographer to concentrate on composition and timing. Focus operation is also quiet and transitions are smooth, although the review notes visible focus breathing when shifting focus from far to near subjects.

The review found very strong central sharpness at f/1.2, with impressive corner performance for such a fast lens. That means the widest aperture can be used confidently when important detail extends beyond the center of the frame.
Some vignetting is visible at f/1.2, but the transition is gradual and it is largely gone by f/2.8. Distortion is very well controlled, with only a slight hint of pincushion distortion, while chromatic aberration and flare remain well managed.
At f/1.2, the transition from sharp detail to defocused areas is rapid but smooth. Out-of-focus highlights are rendered cleanly, and although edge highlights can take on a mild cat’s-eye shape wide open, the overall bokeh remains attractive.
Close focusing at f/1.2 produces an extremely thin plane of focus, so precise placement matters. With capable eye-detection and autofocus, however, the lens can combine strong subject detail with dramatic separation in demanding scenes.
Final assessment
Verdict
The Viltrox AF 35mm F1.2 LAB N FE is undeniably large and heavy, but that trade-off buys the kind of light-gathering ability and shallow depth of field that makes a fast 35mm prime so appealing. The focal length is versatile enough for environmental portraits, documentary and street photography, events, landscapes and low-light work.
More importantly, the optical performance supports that creative promise. Sharpness remains strong from wide open, including toward the corners, while distortion, chromatic aberration and flare are well controlled. Add smooth bokeh, weather-resistant metal construction and a de-clickable aperture ring, and the lens makes a convincing case as a premium LAB-series option.
